Hannah Grimes Incubator Program: A Great “First Office”

This is the year you move off your dining room table and into a REAL office!

The Hannah Grimes Business Incubator Program is perfect for businesses owners looking to move from their dining room tables into their first real office! Join other entrepreneurs in our business growth program who are committed to growing their small businesses. Lease a private office or lease a furnished “part time” office for a specific number of hours per month.

This isn’t just office space: as part of our Business Incubator Program, the rent ($100 - $400/month) also includes business development and educational services, professional networking opportunities, and peer-learning. In fact, active participation and sharing is a critical part of the program, and all new tenants must be approved to join. But you’ll be glad you did!

Spring Local Living Economy Collaboration Coordinator: Libby Weiland

Hello, my name is Libby Weiland and I am excited to be joining the Hannah Grimes Center this spring as an intern with the Monadnock Local Living Economy project!  As Collaboration Coordinator, I am working closely with Jen Risley of Hannah Grimes to gather the best practices related to collaboration building.  My research will not only involve gleaning from the good work of groups collaborating in the area, but will also provide interested groups with the tools needed to create even stronger, lasting, and effective collaborative efforts.  Read more about Libby on the Monadnock Local Living Economy Blog.

Networking: Connect With Your Needs

By Piper C. Reason, Possibilities for Career & Life

Networking is just about helping people connect with what they need. Career coaches consider it the most effective job search strategy because somewhere around 70% of jobs are found by networking. Of course networking isn’t just about looking for a job, so how do you hone this vital skill?  Just like with every other skill you have ever developed: you just have to practice!

Here are some guidelines to help:

Welcome New Hannah Grimes Staff Member: Patricia Richter

Hannah Grimes Center welcomes new employee, Patricia Richter. Pat was hired in December 2011 to fill the one-year, half-time position funded by the Community Development Block Grant Program. Her primary goals are to ensure that by December 2012 Hannah Grimes has a more effective and efficient infrastructure to more fully utilize their new, expanded capacity in the short term and to ensure sustainability of those efforts in the longer term.

What We're Reading

High on BusinessWe just started reading High On Business by Alan Newman (founder of Seventh Generation & Magic Hat Brewing Company).  What's struck me so far is his opening declaration:

I am a "serial entrepreneur" which at least sounds a little more respectable than a "psychopathic opportunity seeker."

Can any of you relate?

We'll be sure to add this title to the Hannah Grimes Library once we've finished reading it!  In the meantime, feel free to email us a paragraph or two about What You're Reading.

Collaborative Innovation

Lots of talk about innovation these days.   "Innovation" has become one  of those grossly overused words, perhaps because we all know it likely is the key to unlocking the secret of managing the fast-paced change and increasing complexity of every aspect of our lives here on earth.   Its overuse and lack of common understanding are almost as notable as "marketing", "goals" and "entrepreneur".  One can innovate in process, product, business model, service, customer engagement and much more.  One can also innovate incrementally or create fundamental innovations--and there is every level of innovation in between.

I would love 2012 to unfold as a year that the Hannah Grimes Center explores with you the ideas of how a community can stay innovative-- especially a rural community like ours. What does it mean?  How does one do it?  How are we already doing it?

Communities Across North America Encourage You to Shift Your Shopping

The Shift Your Shopping Holiday Campaign runs through December 31, 2011.  Citizens are encouraged to shift 10% or more of their holiday purchases to locally-owned and independent businesses.  In its second year, this movement has grown from its New England base -- including the Monadnock, Seacoast and Lakes Regions of New Hampshire -- to over 150 communities across North America.
